The history of Petrine Hvidt

She who gave her name to this inn must have been a strong woman.
Helene Petrine Hvidt was born in 1824. The same year her father, vicar Christian F. Hvidt , and her mother, Charlotte Baade, bought the farm where Petrine grew up.

“In charge of household”

Despite the fact that Petrine was the younger of two sisters and never got married, she took over the farm after her father. In the census of 1865 she is mentioned as “in charge of household”. However, this was not the only thing she was in charge of. The story says that it was Petrine who decided when the farmers should take the cattle up to the summer pasture. No wonder why the other women in the parish made curtsey when they met her.

The big farm at Relling

When vicar Hvidt died in 1869, Petrine became the owner of four farms at Relling. In the census from 1865 she owned 19 cattle, 28 sheep, 19 goats and a staff of servants of 7 persons. It was a big farm she had the responsibility for, in fact at the time it was one of the largest in Storfjorden.
To give you an idea of how she was like; the story says that once the bridge over the river had gone in the flood, she simply crossed the river on stilts!

The “Petrine Apple”

Petrines had interests different from what was usual for girls of her class. She started breeding fruit trees, and finally got the “Petrine Apple”. The apple was early ripened, just in time for the haying, and it was very tasty. But the apple rottened from within, and she replaced the “Petrine Apple” with “Transparente Blanche”. But - you can still find some trees carrying the “Petrine Apple”.

Plans of cultivation became an old people’s home

Petrines testamented her money to a project of draining the marshes at Skuset in Eidsdal in order to make them suitable for farming. But - apparently this plan was too comprehensive, so an application for an alternative use of the funds was sent to Petrine.

It was agreed that the funds instead should be used to build an old people’s home on the condition that it was built at Petrine Hvidt’s property at Relling. The old people’s home was built in 1916 and was named “Petrine Hvidts Minde”. It was in use as an old people’s home until 1987. In 1992 it was rebuilt to an inn and named Petrines Gjestgiveri. In the restaurant we have photos of both Helene Petrine and her sister Karen Maria.
